We Leverage Our Content and Open Doors for Diverse Creative Talent
With our immense reach and unique privilege to help change perceptions with our content, we require diversity and inclusion in the projects we are involved with, whether intended for our own platforms or for distribution. This commitment shows up in the work our many brands produce, everything from newscasts, daytime soaps and reality shows to comedy, drama, music specials and kids’ programming.
We also recognize that for us to be the best creators and storytellers possible, our workforce and talent, including those who work in front of and behind the camera, need to reflect the diversity of our audience. We offer a number of initiatives designed to grow diversity in the talent we engage with, including our ViewFinder Emerging Directors Program, Nickelodeon Writing and Artist Programs, SHOWCASE, ViacomCBS Writers Mentoring Program and ViacomCBS Directing Initiative. In 2020, our brands launched a host of additional efforts and programs designed to increase underrepresented talent. At CBS, for example, beginning with the 2021-2022 development season, the network will allocate a minimum of 25% of its future script development budgets to projects created or co-created by Black, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC), and its writers’ rooms will aim to have a minimum of 40% BIPOC representation, with a goal to increase that number to 50% the following season.
We Ingrain Inclusion into Our Culture and Employee Development
At ViacomCBS, we want you to embrace our values, while still being you. One of the reasons why we consistently champion inclusion is ensure we are creating a workplace where all employees feel they can bring their authentic selves to work—every day.
More than half our employees belong to our Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) that provide a forum for employees to flourish personally and professionally while offering direct business support to all our brands. Here are a few of our eight ERGs: The BEAT+, which focuses on the Black experience; SOMOS, which champions representation of the Latinx community within the company and on our screens; Emerge/CBS Pride, our ERG focused on lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender employees and allies; and Here/CBS Women’s Networking Group, a network rooted in mentorship, education, programming and philanthropic endeavors for members. All of our ERGs are open to all employees.
In addition to our ERGs, our Veterans Network offers veteran, National Guard and Reserve employees a forum for connecting, networking, and personal and professional development. It also provides a much-needed community and support for veterans and their family members.
We also take developing employees very seriously. Our leadership is accountable for developing a diverse, successful workforce. To support this commitment, we have numerous learning and development programs, some developed in-house and others with external partners. Our robust Campus-to-Career programs help us stay identify and track diverse students who are eager to join our industry.
We Maintain Diverse Partnerships
From the content we produce to causes we support, from the expanse of development programs we offer employees to the protocols we put in place to diversify our suppliers, we recognize the importance of partnering with diverse organizations and content creators around the globe. We have a rich history of working with organizations and people who share our commitment to diversity, inclusion, equity and belonging. Our list of partners grows every year, and in 2020 we added important and impactful social justice and anti-racist organizations such as Color of Change, inked an agreement with 21CP Solutions for consultation services for our teams writing crime, police and legal drama series, and announced stronger ties with the NAACP via a major content partnership. And as businesses suffered from the economic effects of COVID-19, SHOWTIME rolled out “Queer to Stay: An LGBTQ+ Business Preservation Initiative,” a partnership with the Human Rights Campaign to support minority-focused LGBTQ+ businesses and community spaces.

Our recruitment strategy provides a framework to ensure we are hiring qualified people across all demographics backed by the principles of respect and inclusion. But we also want to be sure we are looking for talent in a multitude of places, and that’s where our external partnerships play a significant role. We have great relationships with a number of social and professional organizations, including historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs), Girls Who Code, Student Rising Above, CodePath, and the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE). These partnerships drive our efforts to recruit underrepresented talent, particularly in the tech field. We also provide internships that expose students to the various cutting-edge jobs in entertainment technology, along with guidance and mentorship from leaders within our company.
Along with our hiring and recruiting initiatives, we also want to provide growth, visibility, and opportunities for employees as they progress within the organization.
