HOW WE DEFINE & PRACTICE DIVERSITY, EQUITY & INCLUSION💪🏾

Diversity, to us, is not about checking boxes. It's important to us that we diversify our recruiting pipelines and track metrics to ensure we are making meaningful progress, but we will never hire anyone just to check a box. In doing so, we interview candidates from the angle of "culture-add" vs "culture-fit"; different opinions and perspectives mean better decision making for us as a company and for our users. It's been proven that diverse teams outperform, and we are committed to searching far and wide for the best possible talent.

Equity, for us, means taking a hard look at ourselves. We approach this in two ways: externally and internally. Externally, we hire heavily from bootcamps, career changers, and do our best to search out qualified candidates who may have not had the same opportunities, because it aligns with our company values #underdogmentality. Internally, we make sure to always be level setting compensation and leadership opportunities -- we're not afraid to make big compensation adjustments when we find inequities in pay between similar employees.

So, we've brought in all these people with inherent and acquired diversity... now, what? This is where the work matters. Once we've hired these amazing people, we do everything we can to ensure that Underdog is psychologically safe place to work. We do this by remaining open to accountability through feedback and constantly creating spaces for people to feel comfortable speaking up.

We ensure that we make every effort to bring in underrepresented talent, not only in entry level roles, but also in leadership positions. We aren't perfect, but we do our best to create space for those voices, by listening carefully and constantly asking for feedback.

HOW LEADERSHIP SUPPORTS TEAMS & INDIVIDUALS🤝

At the leadership level, we're highly aware that companies do not operate in bubbles; we all live and work in an imperfect world with events that effect people in different ways. We make sure to communicate that everyone can take all the time they need when things happen that may affect employees of different backgrounds.

Underdog implements a minimum-PTO policy -- we provide unlimited PTO to all employees, and track their time off to ensure they are taking enough. If people are taking less than 3 weeks annually, we will gently nudge them to remember to take care of themselves.

Managers are also our biggest tool in keeping a pulse on the company. Managers meet monthly to discuss how we can best support our employees, check in with career development goals, and find ways to give ownership to everyone.

Lastly, we have private affinity groups, who are empowered to hold events, chat, and find community. This includes UD Women, AAPI Underdogs, LGBTQIA+ Underdogs, and LevelUp UD (professional development). Everyone is encouraged to speak up if they are interested in starting an affinity group of their own!

First round: Initial HR call with an Underdog recruiter

Second round: Engineering screen (typically with the hiring manager)

*Option for a take-home test or a live-coding interview

Final round:
1. Take-home test review OR live coding interview
2. Meet the team
3. Culture-add interview
