WE WORK TO PRIORITIZE YOU🙋🏽♀️
Modern Health is a mental health benefits platform for employers. We are the first solution to cover the full spectrum of mental well-being needs through both evidence-based technology and professional support from a certified coach or licensed therapist. Whether someone wants to proactively manage workplace stress or treat depression, Modern Health guides people to the right care at the right time. We empower companies to help all of their employees be the best version of themselves, and believe in meeting people wherever they are in their mental health journey.
We're experiencing rapid growth; as of February 2021, Modern Health has closed its Series D funding round and serves more than 220 enterprise clients around the world—including Pixar, Clif Bar, Zendesk, and Carta. When we design our services we focus on a few key components:
1. Personalized matching - Confiding in someone is already hard as it is. We want to empower our members to seek support and feel comfortable speaking to a specialist of a certain race/ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, or other characteristic, and we will work with them to find the best possible fit to fit their needs and preferences.
2. Diverse provider networks - Maintaining a diverse network of coaches and therapists is a top priority for us so that our members feel confident that they’re receiving culturally responsive care. Our network spans 30+ countries in 35+ languages, and includes those who have specialized expertise in working with people from all walks of life.
3. Community Healing Circles - In support of communities experiencing stress and trauma, we host recurring therapist-led group sessions, designed to be intimate, safe spaces to uplift participants and empower them to collectively learn, share, and heal.
4. Digital offerings - Our digital programs are evidence-based exercises that are organized into topic-based kits, and we actively add content based on environmental, economic, and current events. For example, in response to COVID-19 we launched 10 digital programs based on topics our coaches and therapists were working on with clients. We are currently working on developing additional content on inclusion and belonging in light of current events, as well.
WHAT WE VALUE MOST 🥇
People First - We will go above-and-beyond to build and maintain high quality experiences, with a focus on triple wins for the user, the provider, and Modern Health.
Bias Toward Action - We relish the chance to jump into problems and initiate solutions, even if it falls outside our job description.
Embrace The Journey - We focus on embracing the openness and positivity of accepting new and sometimes uncomfortable situations, with the goal of adding to the solutions others are trying to develop.
DIVERSITY, EQUITY & INCLUSION DRIVES US👲🏽👩🏾🦱👳🏼♀️
Defining diversity is key because it can be rightly criticized as a nebulous -- or at worst an empty -- buzzword. At Modern Health, diversity means embracing, celebrating, and promoting perspectives from all walks of life (diversity of race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, age, physical abilities, religious beliefs, political beliefs, or other ideologies). We strive to foster an intentional and compassionate environment where everyone can be the most authentic version of themselves. Diversity, equity, and inclusion are at the forefront of our efforts to help individuals succeed in both their personal and professional lives. By prioritizing community, education, and accountability, we are creating the foundation for an equitable environment where everyone can thrive.
Simply put it means everyone has the same opportunities to succeed, acknowledging systemic inequalities, and actively bridging those who do not have those opportunities. Whether that be through mentorship programs, management courses, stipends to attend conferences, or compensation, we try to enable our teammates to succeed and be the best version of themselves that they can be. We do regular compensation audits to ensure that pay is fair and equitable for all employees.
Inclusivity to us means maintaining a community where everyone is free to come as they are, free from judgement and being singled out. Having an inclusive environment is critical for the psychological safety of both our employees and our members of the platform. For our employees, they should feel comfortable operating across teams and building relationships with each other. No one should have to worry about the risks of their voice being diminished due to who they are and what they look like. For our members, inclusion is important because mental health care is not a one size fits all practice. We want to ensure that every member can find a mental health care professional that will support them for their specific needs. It can take a lot for a member to share parts of themselves when seeking care, so we work hard to make sure we are sourcing quality professionals for our network of providers.
To allow space for those who don’t often get it, we’ve worked on projects such as revising all of our language to make it more nuanced and specific, adding values to all interviews to allow for other experiences to be considered rather than just colloquial technical ability, promoting a fully transparent work culture where people are encouraged to join other meetings in different orgs and can participate in cross-functional projects, enforcing parental/ caretaker working hours for those who don’t work traditional hours, and infusing a section into performance reviews that incentives inclusive behaviors and actions.
Our team participates in regular trainings with DEI leaders on topics such as allyship, anti-racism, and unconscious bias. These educational opportunities are critical to our vision of creating lasting change, because when everyone has the opportunity to unlearn and relearn together as a community, we are empowered to hold one another accountable.
All have a monthly stipend and encouraged to create opportunities for connecting with their teams via virtual off sites.
"As a mental health company it's so important for us to practice what we preach, whether that is being vulnerable about our own mental health, encouraging employees to use resources, or encouraging boundaries and time off. Our people are what makes me love working here so ensuring that people are taken care of is the most important thing." - Myra Altman, VP of Clinical Care
“I would say I feel that leadership at Modern Health values and supports my health, happiness and well being by fostering a company culture of trust, support and collaboration. While working at Modern Health the leadership has been very supportive of my well being and shown a great amount of flexibility that enables me to maintain a healthy work life balance. Then of course there is also the excellent benefits package including healthcare, unlimited PTO and the wellness stipend which show we really value the wellbeing of our employees.” - Joe Nave, Data Engineer
“At Modern Health, we pride ourselves on our value-driven culture that guides us on our journey to increase the accessibility of mental health services for all. Among our values is People First--our belief that we must prioritize our members, providers, and employees in the decisions we make. We emphasize the importance for all employees to take care of themselves and families -- as we believe this is paramount to everyone’s personal fulfillment and ability to find meaning in their work. We try to do our part by offering amazing benefits and a meaningful mission to pursue, and also the time and space to get away from work to care for themselves and loved ones when needed." - Alyson Watson, CEO
OUR COMMITMENTS AND INVESTMENTS🤝
We invest in supporting our Employee Resource Group (ERGs), Modern Melanin and Mi Gente. Our ERGs provide our team with a community, a forum to discuss issues and events, and a means to drive initiatives that make Modern Health an inclusive place to work. Members of our executive team regularly attend ERG meetings to learn and engage, show support, and to provide a clear channel for raising any feedback from ERGs to our leadership team.
Our internal Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Committee is made up of individuals from various teams at Modern Health. The DEI Committee is comprised of both leadership and team members from various teams and serves as a resource to answer and field any questions, ideas, and feedback from our employees.
We recognize that actions, and not only words, are required for meaningful change. Our monthly Anti-Racism Dialogues serves as a forum for us as a company to discuss ways that we each can actively combat racism and contribute to meaningful change. Each session is followed by calls to action such as signing petitions, promoting voter registration, and donating to worthy causes.
To promote psychology safety amongst our team, we encourage a culture of transparency and vulnerability. True to our mission, we prioritize the mental wellbeing of our team and acknowledge that mental health comes before work. We normalize being open about our own mental health and lead with vulnerability when discussing our own mental wellbeing.
Externally, we host Circles to provide support for the broader community on topics like Healing Racial Trauma and Managing Political Anxiety. These therapist-led sessions are free to the public as a dedicated space to process and heal. Advocating for representation of underrepresented groups is important to us. We partner with organizations like Our Collective, CS YOU, and Black Tech Pipeline in an effort to advance inclusion of underrepresented talent in tech.
