Understand the user: Our business is very simple: we help people save time / money on taxes and in exchange, they give us money. We don’t sell their data or monetize with ads.

Although we're a small team right now (4 people), our business is growing, and we've also recently raised funding. We're looking to grow the team the right way. We are actively seeking out candidates from a variety of backgrounds, both through traditional channels (LinkedIn), as well as through channels that cater specifically to underrepresented groups.
Equity means treating everyone fairly, regardless of their background.
One of the most important ways we practice equity is through compensation. First, we never ask about salary history - we think that a person should be paid based on what they bring to the table now, not based on what they negotiated in the past. Second, we have a philosophy of "no negotiation". We believe that everyone at the same level for the same job should be paid exactly the same. Salaries are based on data from other Series A startups, and we update our benchmarks yearly.

As a small team, we practice inclusion both at work and outside work. At work, if there is a debate (for example, about a product change), we are respectful in our communication, and we try and gather every person's opinion. We are always open to someone speaking their mind, but at the same time we try to be humble and admit when we're wrong.
Outside work, we do group hikes every few months, and, coronavirus permitting, we have group dinners every few weeks. Everyone is invited, but these activities are always optional, and we generally don't try to focus too much on work during these activities.

HOW WE'RE BUILDING DIVERSE REPRESENTATION ON OUR TEAM ⚒
First, when it comes to traditional channels such as LinkedIn and AngelList, we focus on relevant work experience (ideally startup work) and skills (React Native, Node). We don't filter by school, and we don't require a big company name (e.g., Google or Facebook) on the candidate's resume.
Second, we use channels (such as Black Tech Pipeline, among others) that cater specifically from underrepresented groups.
