Diversity: the representation of people with different backgrounds, identities, perspectives or needs

We focus on hiring a diverse workforce so we can support all of our users. However, diversity needs to be coupled with equity investments so we are truly building a diverse group that feels supported and has equal opportunity.

Equity: Fair treatment and access to opportunities, resources and support that takes into account the existing advantages and barriers that an individual may be experiencing; involves understanding people’s differing needs in order to reach their potential or achieve a shared outcome.

Instagram's Equity team is hiring: The Instagram Equity Team works towards shifting the balance of power in these systems, changing the existing group/structure so it is built for everyone, not just some.

Inclusion is important towards progress but does not adequately address the current systems of power that fundamentally support certain groups more than others and perpetuate biases.

OUR COMMITMENTS TO DIVERSITY & RETENTION🎤

We focus on hiring a diverse workforce to support all of our users. Last year, we set the goal of “50 in 5,” which means that by 2024, at least 50% of our workforce will be underrepresented people. In doing this, we aim to double the number of women employees globally and double the number of Black and Hispanic employees in the US.

We’ve made a number of changes to our company in the past year, including improving our performance system to enhance inclusion, creating additional reporting channels for discrimination and policy violations, and launching a tool for surfacing micro-aggressions to the leaders who bear responsibility for our culture and environment.

We remain committed to building a company in which all of our employees are seen, heard and valued — and a global community where everyone has access to opportunity with dignity.

1. Employee resource groups - Community is core to Instagram. We build community in the world, and we nurture a variety of communities inside the company. No matter where you are, there is something here for everyone. Instagram and Meta Resource Groups are inclusive communities that serve a traditionally underrepresented group. They serve as the catalyst for fostering an inclusive environment that positively impacts our business. From APIs@, Black@, Differently Abled, Veterans, Interfaith, Latin@, Native@, Pride@ and Women@ - our employees can grow their careers, empower each other & build together through participation in our resource groups.

2. Diversity events - Meta and Instagram actively sponsors key industry diversity conferences (ex. Afrotech, Grace Hopper, Society of Hispanic Engineers, 3% Conference) and hosts events around the world. Globally, we run and participate in hundreds of events a year, and have also designed several recruiting focused event series to connect a diverse set of talent to our internal community and leaders, and give them real talk about life and opportunities at Meta.

3. Anti-bias or other diversity training programs:

3.a. Managing Bias training - (mandatory for managers) Surfacing and understanding the unconscious biases that we all have and learning how to counteract them is crucial as we strive to build inclusion at Meta and Instagram. Our Managing Bias learning program is a foundational training course using academic and industry research, and Meta specific examples, to illustrate the types of unconscious bias prevalent in the workplace. This course offers actionable strategies employees can use to increase awareness of and counteract unconscious bias while at work.

3.b. Be the Ally training - Be the Ally is an interactive facilitated workshop about how to be a better ally in the workplace. In these workshops, Instagram employees of all genders, races and backgrounds debug real-life situations where allies are needed at work.

3.c. Managing Inclusion - Managing Inclusion is a Learning & Development program that builds people manager capabilities to create inclusion for every member of their team.

HOW WE'RE IMPLEMENTING NEW POLICIES & SYSTEMS TO CREATE SPACE AND EQUALITY🚨

We are building multiple full time teams to support this work in product and in our company (these teams, as well as other teams at our company, are hiring!). Our goal is equal opportunity for everyone, which means changing existing systems to no longer perpetuate biases. We are here to do the hard work that has far-reaching, systemic impact so underserved groups truly have equal support, space, and opportunity. We are focusing on creating a company culture that supports this and hiring a group of people who want to make this happen.
