Handshake was created to ensure that all college students have equal access to meaningful careers. Since our 2013 founding in Michigan, our network of education and employer partners—and the impact for students— has grown exponentially. Within a few years, Handshake has become the leading early career community in the US.

Students first - Our mission is to democratize access to opportunity and ensure any student can build a great career no matter who they know, where they live, or what school they attend. We empathize deeply with our students to increase career opportunities for all.

Focus on impact - We stay humble and work hard to democratize opportunity for all students. We like to have fun—and we do—but we’re always focused on how we can best make an impact.

Move quickly, but don’t rush - We believe speed wins, and our operational pace is incredibly fast. Moving quickly while staying aligned requires strategic thought, collaboration, and frequent communication.

Learn. Grow. Repeat. - We embrace a growth mindset, enabling our team to face obstacles with a tenacious desire to turn challenges into opportunities for growth. We are relentlessly curious, working to close the gap between what we currently know and what we need to know to be as effective as possible.

Act with empathy - We listen closely to understand our users and clients, approach challenges with curiosity, and treat our colleagues and clients with compassion.

Empowered by diversity - We are building an inclusive and diverse community—both on the Handshake platform and across our team. We believe diverse teams create more thoughtful and innovative solutions and that diverse companies are more successful.

We believe that talent is evenly distributed but opportunity is not. We believe that all people should have access to opportunity. We also believe having a diverse team at Handshake is critical to help us build solutions to this problem.

At Handshake, inclusivity means that people of all backgrounds have an opportunity to build a meaningful career no matter who they are. It means:

✊🏾 Proactively building systems to ensure we have pay equity across all groups at Handshake.

✊🏾 All people have equal opportunities to be promoted and advance in their career

✊🏾 Everyone has a chance for their voice to be heard and considered.

We still have a lot of areas we need to be constantly growing here. We hold ourselves accountable to that growth, and to equitability in a variety of ways. A few of them are:

Culture Amp surveys every quarter are reviewed for gaps across groups and provide ways for individuals to share feedback in safe, confidential ways. Each year we commit to annual themes to close any gaps we identify.

We proactively audit pay equity using an external system every year, as well as have strong guidelines around our bands to ensure pay is decided on in equal ways.

We developed meeting guidelines to help ensure meetings are spaces where equitability is always top of mind.

We work closely with our DEI task force to continue to identify our biggest opportunities to always continue to improve.

Inclusion at Handshake really means both Inclusion AND Belonging. All Handshakers should be able to bring their full selves to work, be able to find a community they connect with, and feel supported and welcomed.

A few of the ways we try to ensure there is strong Inclusion and Belonging for all Handshakers:

Our Handshake Communities (ERGs). We have strongly encouraged and supported our Handshake Communities since the early days of Handshake. We provide funding as well to our Communities, partner with them to sponsor events and programs, and work to also partner with Communities to help amplify and hear voices on issues across the company.

We focus on representation not just company-wide - but on each team. We believe it’s important that the representation of each individual team matters as much as representation across the company, especially when it comes to having a sense of belonging on your team.

Inclusion also means that Handshakers have a chance to have their voice heard on important issues. We look at the way meetings are run, as well as also making sure that meetings are not the sole opportunity to speak up or share a perspective.

We have Employee Communities (or Employee Resource Groups) which have proven to be successful resources for employees to connect with one another, and Communities have led company-wide events and initiatives including a Hanukkah celebration, advocacy around Black History Month and International Women’s Month, and other opportunities for the team to learn from and share with one another around diverse backgrounds and perspectives. Today we have more than 11 employee-led Communities.

These Communities make Handshake the place it is today, and we’re committed to celebrating, advocating, and supporting these groups. We want team members to feel safe to show up as their authentic selves.

We also focus on continuing to also try to build and reinforce a culture of active allyship. This happens through things like our Handshake For All community where we frequently discuss topics such as how to be a better ally and bring those practices to the organization, company-wide events and initiatives focused on learning and growth.

Handshake’s Leadership team, alongside managers and individuals across the company, deliberately established a Handshake career framework that clearly laid out our expectations around scope, skills, and values-aligned behavior that would lead to growth at Handshake. By establishing clear information accessible to everyone, every employee can gain a better understanding of how to advance in their careers, regardless of team, background, or experience level. Setting comprehensive and transparent company-wide expectations help us ensure that everyone has access to opportunities for upward mobility, rather than leaving it to chance that some may figure out how to navigate the organization.

We look at this across two levels:
How do we make an impact through our product and our partnerships? How do we make sure we are also making the change we want to see in the world ourselves within Handshake?

The first is connected directly to our mission to democratize access to opportunity. There are so many things that can stand in the way of equitable access to opportunity. We are focused on building a platform that enables everyone to be able to reach meaningful opportunities. The first job in a person’s career can have a major impact on their long term outcome and is a pivotal time to help make that change.

Internally, to solve this problem we need to be building a team that is diverse, and to be a company where all Handshakers truly feel they can belong and show up fully to work, with equitable access to opportunities. We certainly are not perfect and have areas we need to grow -- but we are closely focused on making sure we become better every single year and every day.
