Gen Z is stuck within outdated institutions that are not preparing them for their futures. Social learning connects young people to each other so they can study and explore their futures together. We are building for a diverse community of young people and it's important that our team reflects our users. Team diversity allows us to be more robust in every decision because we consider different perspectives. This is one reason that we need to ensure diversity on every team. We also want young people to see themselves in us and to see tech startups as a space they can grow into and make societal impact in. Our mission to unlock opportunities for students starts with our own team.

We are determined to give everyone equal access to the same opportunities and resources, but we realize our efforts must be intentional and reach across all underrepresented communities.

We are fearless in our pursuit of making our platform equitable for all because we're building a company we would have loved to have existed when we were in high school. We provide mostly free high quality resources to millions of students around the globe, regardless of their socioeconomic status.

We fundamentally believe that we should not be gatekeepers of content or knowledge, but we can do our part in making sure that different groups of students can access our materials and networks of support to achieve a student's own definition of success.

It's important to recognize that inclusion isn't just limited to race or ethnicity, but a variety of other things that make up someone's identity and as well: their perspective, their lived experiences, how they identify in terms of gender and sexuality, the communities they are a part of, and so much more.

At Fiveable, one of the most important voices we include in every conversation in every area of the company are students. We center students in everything we do because we represent them and we work hard everyday to make sure that their needs are being met beyond APs.

They're looped into our hiring process โ€” each new teammate has to be able to connect to and advocate for young people and their best interests, not what we believe to be their best interests, through the work that they do for Fiveable. This means taking into account different learning styles, student behaviors, struggles and pain points, and incorporating empathy into every decision we make.

SAFE SPACES FOR OUR TEAM MEMBERS ๐Ÿ˜Œ

The magic of Fiveable is our community and that requires intentional safe spaces for our young people as well as our staff. Within our team and community spaces, we have created affinity groups so that there are safe places to discuss shared experiences. We are also a very progressive team that openly discusses the need for inclusivity in our broader political and cultural spaces. When things happen, we create space for people to heal as they need.

TRULY GIVING BACK TO OUR EMPLOYEES ๐ŸคŽ

Our team is the only reason we exist, and so our health, happiness, and goals are a top priority. Aside from generous benefits, we seek to create a community where peoples' well-beings are at the forefront of our actions.

We don't just offer unlimited time off - we model what it looks like to take it. We don't just offer a health and wellness stipend - we take the time in 1-on-1s and department meetings to check in on employee well-being. We have Slack channels dedicated to non work-related topics and we plan company events that encourage building community outside of work projects. We create growth plans for each employee so they are taking charge of what their future looks like at this company. While building community in remote work can be difficult, we see it as a priority for the overall health of our company.

Fiveable's co-founders represent many of the underestimated groups in tech. Amanda is a Latina woman of color and the daughter of a Brazilian immigrant. Tรกn is queer, mixed Asian and black, and the son of a Vietnamese immigrant. We are the face of entrepreneurship, just as much as anyone else, but we are too often not trusted or respected as leaders. We are breaking down barriers and holding the door open for the generation after us.

We are intentional about creating space for underestimated folx:

- We have multiple opportunities for students to intern at a young age and create experiences for themselves. We also ask where we should recruit from to consider more BIPOC folx to hire.
- We open up late night and weekend interview slots since some people don't have the ability to leave their day job/duties for an interview.
- Even our investors are a diverse group of individuals within the tech space that promote underrepresented people and teams and help their visions and voices be seen and heard
