Our founders built the distributed storage systems that scaled Twitter and set out to create the data platform that they would've wanted. We built on that foundation to deliver the best serverless data API to power the next generation of applications.

Our mission is to make working with operational data productive, scalable, and secure for every software development team.

At Fauna, our core principles create a framework for all of our actions and are foundational to our culture. They guide everything we do, including how we interact with our employees, customers and community, and our vendors and business partners. As we grow, our processes and strategies will change, but these nine principles will persist.

Solve for the customer - We succeed when our customers succeed. We listen, learn and anticipate their needs so that all customers, not just the loudest, can realize their ambitions. We strive to delight developers, foster a vibrant community, and be a strategic business partner that our customers can trust.

Be optimistic and think big - We are ambitious, with big goals. We are micro pessimists but macro optimists. We communicate bold directions and will look around corners for ways to achieve them. We maintain perspective and unite to overcome challenges. We co-create solutions instead of choosing to blame and criticize.

Innovate where it matters - We innovate deliberately to achieve a distinct competitive advantage and are not limited by a “not invented here mentality." We avoid undifferentiated heavy lifting by embracing partnerships and taking advantage of products and services that are continuously improving.

Own it and make it happen - We build our company like it’s ours because it is. We work hard and smart with a bias towards actions that deliver results. Speed matters so we don’t let perfection be the enemy of good enough. We commit and deliver. If we make a mistake, we own it, fix it, learn from it and move on.

Seek the best idea, then commit - We stay curious, creative and always seek out unique perspectives. We dive deep into the details and raise questions when metrics and anecdotes differ. We have conviction and challenge ideas, even when it’s uncomfortable. Once a decision is made, even if we prefer another, we disagree and commit.

Act with integrity - We are open, honest, and respectful. We listen attentively and speak candidly, continuously working to build mutual trust and understanding across all levels of the organization. We are transparent in our communications and actions with each other, customers, partners, and our broader community.

Work as one team - Great achievements are the result of many, not just one. We strive to do our best, check our egos at the door, and always give each other the benefit of the doubt. We are all company owners and always do what’s best for the organization overall.

Attract and develop the best - We hire, develop and empower the best. We believe that being the best requires diversity, which fosters innovation, creativity, and empathy in ways that homogeneity cannot. We embrace our differences, recognize talent, and invest in mechanisms and coaching to proactively develop careers.

Stay hungry and humble - Only the paranoid survive. We avoid hubris and strive to do better, no matter how much we achieve. We recognize that complacency means irrelevance and we relentlessly seek opportunities to improve.

Diversity means actively seeking out teammates whose experiences complement and extend past our familiarities. Diversity is important not only because it’s the right thing to do, but also because it provides a competitive advantage. The greater the variety of experiences we encounter, the more empathetic we become. You will find that one of our core principles is “Attract and Develop the best”. We believe that being the best requires diversity, which fosters innovation, creativity, and empathy in ways that homogeneity cannot. We embrace our differences, recognize talent, and invest in mechanisms and coaching to proactively develop careers.

Equity means treating each other as equally valued members of the team. All Fauns must know that their opinions and experiences are valued. We practice equity by actively encouraging each team member to share their thoughts and input. Fauna is a small company with around forty people. We need everyone to know that their voice matters and to know objectively that they are valued equally.

Inclusivity is the outbound work of ensuring that a diverse team is not only treated equally but is valued specifically because of who they are. Inclusion is especially important at a 100% remote company like Fauna, where we all have to make an effort to create connections with one another. Those connections most commonly come from moments of authenticity, where we are personally vulnerable on the edges of a professional interaction. For that to happen, Fauns need to know that they can bring their full, authentic selves to every interaction and that we will welcome and value each one.

Our first step is by being intentional and transparent in our efforts for attracting and hiring from all backgrounds! We have evaluated ourselves and are making an intentional effort to attract candidates from under-represented groups. Even though we’re an early stage startup, we are growing and placing special care around our efforts for a more formal DEI initiative backed by leadership support and our overall culture. We are investing in this area.

Leadership at all levels supports employee health, happiness, and goals with concrete actions. We pay for our employee benefits premiums at 100% and a portion of the dependents they may enroll. Employees are encouraged to use leave as needed, and leadership sets the example by doing the same. Fauna is not a “work yourself into the ground” company; that thinking does not align with our core principles. We set quarterly OKR’s at the Executive level and employees know their part in meeting those. When you know your goals, you are able to plan. This allows for a strong work life balance and sense of achievement.

Intention in hiring is our first step in changing the tech industry. We seek top talent here on Black Tech Pipeline and other platforms to set an example of an early company working to reflect the world around ourselves, so that future Fauns look to us and see a home for themselves. We hope you’ll join us and help make that vision a reality!

  • Thirty-minute (30 min) phone screen with the hiring manager.
  • Participate in a “loop” of about 4 interviews with future colleagues, both from the team you will join and adjacent teams. Technical assessment varies by position, but is typically done early in the process in a way that respects your time and recognizes its value!
  • All applicants will have the opportunity to meet our CEO prior to offer.

Tech Stack:

We use a variety of the latest technologies and patterns to deliver Fauna to our customers. Core database engineers should expect to work with Scala and Sangria for GraphQL. Infrastructure engineers use Pulumi to provision and manage our infrastructure on Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Google Cloud Platform (GCP). Other roles build with everything from React, Next.js, and Vue on the frontend to Node.js and Go on the backend.

Health and well-being - We believe you shouldn’t have to worry about Medical/Dental/Vision/Basic Life Insurance, so we provide great coverage for our employees with a choice of a variety of providers!

Paid sick leave - Let’s face it, we all get sick or need to care for a loved one who is! At Fauna, we provide all our employees with Paid Sick Days to ensure they, as well as their loved ones, are happy and healthy!

Stock options - Who wouldn’t want a piece of this exciting company! Stock options are granted to employees to encourage everyone to think and act like an owner.

Unlimited paid time off (PTO) - All our employees are afforded an unlimited number of vacation days and are encouraged to take time needed to get away and recharge their batteries.

The best equipment - For anyone to do their job well, they need the right tools. At Fauna we let you select your preference between a Mac or PC and provide all the productive software you need to be successful in your role.

Community engagement - Our employees are passionate about making the world a better place. We offer all employees paid Civic Days annually and Fauna sponsors a Matching Gifts program for employee donations to qualified non-profit organizations!
