WE CATER TO INDIVIDUAL NEEDS & BRING IDEAS TO LIFE💡

We largely focus on client service work, creating custom solutions with clients across a wide variety of industries. We also do exploratory work, and design sprints, and have started to delve into product. We’re building digital products and experience, but in a sense we’re also building people, teams, and organizations based on the way we approach our work internally and our relationships with the clients we serve across many industries. Our impact goes beyond just company revenue — apprenticeships and our community work have a totally different type of impact, and is something we prioritize alongside the work we do with our clients.

THE FORMULA WE WORK BY 🧪

We created Detroit Labs with four founding principles in mind. These principles helped guide our growth during our early years and are what we use today to help guide strategic decisions about our future.

Growth

Create a company that generates financial stability and reward, and enables personal and professional growth. We want to be able to afford new things, make a little more money every year, invest ahead of need, and be prepared to weather the ups and downs of our business.

Team

Create a company where openness, honesty, transparency, and participation is necessary for success. Embrace a decentralized agency model where individuals are able to participate in company decisions and express their genius. Where possible, provide team members a chance to be heard and provide thoughts and feedback. Support an opt-in system where those with interest or knowledge of a topic can contribute.

Opportunity

Create the ability to take chances on new, emerging, and unique technologies or projects. Support a culture willing to explore new business models and abandon what we're good at today for what provides a better future tomorrow.

Community

Create a company that can give back and appreciate the community we are in. Invest in and prioritize opportunities to embrace community and local opportunities. Never forget our success would be a fraction of what it is without our strong community support.

OUR BEST PRACTICES AROUND DE&I 📌

To us diversity means the team is made up of a variety of identities and experiences. We understand that, for example, Black women have a unique and valuable perspective based on their lived experiences. That our trans team members provide insights that help us build better products. We encourage our team members to be aware of the table and who is missing. To take proactive steps in bringing those voices into the room and handing them the mic. As an example we have intentionally designed our interview panels to ensure we have not only a diversity in role but identities in the room.

Inclusion is a practice of creating an environment of belonging and appreciation. We value this because we know that we can have the most diverse representation of the whole world on our team but if they don’t feel comfortable sharing their ideas or pushing back on possible harms or showcasing their skills, then it’s useless. On each of our project teams we have a project team agreement where teams are encouraged to clearly spell out how they expect one to interact, how to object and to share their individual goals. This creates built in accountability so every team member is empowered to help the team live up to our organizational value of being people-focused.

Equity at Labs means the intentional practice of building processes and practices that serve the needs of our individual team members, meeting them where they are. It is our responsibility to acknowledge and operate with the understanding that there is no such thing as a level playing field and to provide the opportunities and resources each team member needs to thrive. This shows up in our team member goal development process, where each team member establishes goals based on their individual goals and our support team helps provide the opportunities needed in support of those goals.

HOW LEADERSHIP PRACTICES SAFETY & SUPPORT ⛑

We provide multiple avenues for our team members to share their thoughts, ideas, struggles and triumphs. From our affinity group Slack channels, to our bi-weekly JEDI office hours, to our anonymous Slack message options.

Some of the most important ways our leadership supports employee health, happiness and show up in our open vacation policy- if you need time, you can take it. We’ve been at home since last March, with no plans to return to the office until it’s safe to do so. We encourage our team to take mental health days, and push to ensure that a work/life balance is being struck for team members. Our parental leave policy is generous, and there is additional support in place for parents working at home with children during the pandemic. In terms of supporting goals, our review process is focused on goals set by team members themselves, and how our team can support team members in pursuit of those specific goals.

CREATING CHANGE & MAKING IMPACT ☄️

A few ways we are actively working to be part of the change that the tech industry needs to see is by actively revising our interview process to have increased standardization and team training to reduce bias in our process. We are actively recruiting and fostering relationships with organizations that work with underrepresented people to ensure that our opportunities are visible to them. We are also continuing to invest in programs like our apprenticeship program that supports candidates coming from nontraditional backgrounds. Honestly, we’re still working on a lot of this, especially when it comes to representation in leadership positions, and more senior roles. Once someone is hired, we have several affinity groups and a bi-weekly JEDI meeting for open conversations, as well as more structured JEDI focused meetings throughout the year. One way we work to ensure that people’s voices are heard, is by actively seeking out the input of our underrepresented team members when decisions are made, and by ensuring that we’re including those voices when various decision-making workgroups or committees are formed.

INTERVIEW PROCESS ⏳

GTKY (Getting to Know You) Application Form

We don’t need your resume, unless you want to share. We want to get to know about your experiences in your own words.

First Interview

A remote interview with three team members, at least one of which share your role. We send you six questions in advance, and then discuss them in a conversational format. Of course, there will be time for your questions as well. Our goal here is to assess mutual values alignment and ensure that we all walk away with confidence that Labs is a place where you could find success.

Second Interview

A remote interview with 3-4 team members, at least 2 of which share your role. This interview is intended to help us understand how you do the work, using a practical skills assessment. You’re encouraged to ask questions, use resources (we all Google!), and whatever else you need as you work through some exercises with our team.
