TUNE INTO THE CULTURE AT AUDIBLE 🎧
In pursuit of the idea that technology can transform a culture, we created the first mobile audio player in 1997, four years before the iPod was introduced. Audible’s consistent focus on technological innovation and superior programming has earned the company many millions of habituated subscribers. Our innovations include Whispersync for Voice, which enables book lovers to switch seamlessly between reading and listening without losing their place.
We are a company whose entrepreneurial spirit has defined us since our founding in 1995. We are pioneers and inventors who are not afraid to disrupt the status quo, and we apply that innovative approach to everything we do—from revolutionizing an art form to enacting positive change in the cities and countries in which we operate.
DIVERSITY & REPRESENTATION 👋🏿👋🏽👋🏾
Audible’s mission is to build and sustain a culture of respect, one that fosters meaningful connections. We respect and celebrate the full spectrum of human experience. That’s why we encourage a sense of community both within the walls of Audible and outside of them. In everything we do, we seek to empower, engage, and inspire our colleagues, creators, listeners, and communities.
We know that when we see ourselves reflected in our workplaces and feel celebrated for who we are, we’re inspired to express our authentic selves. When an employee feels respected because of—not in spite of—their individuality, it leads to greater creativity and innovation. We truly believe that the nurturing and full use of our employees’ unique backgrounds, experiences, perspectives, and talents is at the heart of our competitive success.
We call the embodiment and practice of these beliefs Spectrum and Belonging (S&B). S&B actively celebrates the glories of the human spectrum, inviting our differences to the table and creating space for all to be heard.
To ensure we are hiring from across this spectrum, we not only seek out and recruit talent from all backgrounds, but we actively cultivate a pipeline of talent with diverse experiences, perspectives, and ideas. Our “Next Chapter” Returnship Program offers paid full-time internships to mid-career professionals who have taken a year or more off for caregiving. Upon successful completion of the returnship, there is a possibility of an offer for full-time employment. And we have several paid internship programs that foster future hires from local high schools and college programs. (See below for more detail on those.)
We also partner with PerScholas, Pursuit, Resilient Coders, Girls Who Code, Women Impact Tech, Power to Fly, AnitaB.org and Grace Hopper Celebration, Blavity and AfroTech, Lesbians Who Tech, Black Product Manager Network and others to curate audiences for our tech talks and events. We partner with student groups at colleges and universities like NJIT, Howard University, and Rutgers, among others, to host events and attend career fairs.
EQUITY IS INTENTIONAL ⚖️
As we celebrate the glories of the human spectrum, we acknowledge that everyone has different needs, experiences, and opportunities. We strive to create an environment built on mutual respect and dignity, through programs and processes that focus on increasing equality of opportunity not just for our employees, but also in our communities.
We moved our headquarters to Newark in 2007 to be part of the renaissance of a great American city and create such opportunities for city residents. In 2020, we launched the Global Center for Urban Development to expand our impact initiatives aimed at advancing equality, racial justice, and economic empowerment. This impact work encompasses Audible locations in cities around the world and includes programs and policy initiatives that can be adopted in cities globally.
We actively recruit people from a broad spectrum of backgrounds to build a supportive and inclusive workplace. We take steps to ensure employees have a sense of belonging, value, and opportunity. We believe that creating equality in the workplace empowers our employees to innovate and build deeper connections with our customers and communities.
HOW WE'VE BUILT AN INCLUSIVE COMMUNITY👩🏽🦱👩🏼🦰🧑🏼🦱
As an audio entertainment company that empowers, informs, and entertains millions of listeners around the world, we know the value of stories and voices, and that value starts in our workplace. Spectrum & Belonging actively amplifies voices so that all employees feel heard and appreciated for exactly who they are. Employee-led Impact Groups, including Audible’s Black Employee Network (BEN), AudiblePRIDE, Women@Audible, Women in Tech, UNIDOS, and Moms@Audible, are a vital part of our work culture and regularly hold events to share perspectives, foster allyship, and build community.
WE WANT ALL EMPLOYEE'S TO BE A "CULTURE ADD"🎤
Our People Principles codify our work culture, which places a premium on inclusion, belonging, respect, and a fulfilling and energized life both inside and outside of the office. In fact, our Activate Caring principle is so key to our culture, that it’s a critical part of our hiring, performance, and promotion processes.
We often hear the term “culture fit” in regards to recruitment … but “fit” with what? With whom? We’re more interested in “culture adds”: What unique background, experience, and perspective will you bring as we innovate in service to customers around the world?
HOW LEADERSHIP PRIORITIZES HEALTH & HAPPINESS😌
In 2019, we created WE@Audible (Workplace Evolved), a cross-functional team of employees representing technology, HR, facilities, communications, and brand to focus on reimagining the future of work. The goal of WE@Audible is to design and implement solutions that meet employees’ needs today while also evolving our workplace permanently to meet the needs of tomorrow. This includes completely reimagining the role of our workplace in our day-to-day lives as we shift to a more flexible and remote work culture, one that balances working from home and the in-person office experience.
To help employees achieve better work-life integration, health, and well-being, we’ve expanded our benefits and assistance programs to include virtual counseling, support for caregivers, and access to legal, financial, and medical support for family members. In 2020, we provided extra personal days for employees to use however they needed. This year, we’re creating more opportunities for employees to take mental health days, while also encouraging better boundaries around meeting schedules and off-hours work.
CREATING CHANGE IN & OUTSIDE OF AUDIBLE🤝
When we moved our headquarters to Newark in 2007, we started our paid high school internship program with Newark schools. Through our Future Leaders Program, high school interns have the opportunity to work alongside a range of teams, including tech, to inspire their career goals. After graduating, our interns may choose to become Audible Scholars, with monthly stipends, returning to work with us in the summers as they earn an undergraduate college degree. We also work to assist our Scholars in realizing their post-graduate aspirations, including, wherever possible, joining us as Audible employees.
In addition, our Technology Internship Program actively recruits undergraduate and graduate college tech students from diverse backgrounds for paid internships at Audible. This immersive summer internship provides professional experiences in fields from engineering and quality assurance to data science and project management. Eighty-five percent of our college tech interns receive a full-time offer after they graduate.
