GREAT EXPERIENCES ARE FUELED BY DIVERSITY, EQUITY & INCLUSION
Our differences are what shape the world, and we’re committed to ensuring everyone is seen, heard, and feels like they truly belong. That’s why we’re actively cultivating an inclusive and diverse workplace where every voice is valued, teamwork is rewarded, and different points of view are celebrated. We see diversity of people and experiences as fuel for the creativity and innovation we need to be and deliver our best, for our colleagues, customers and the communities we serve.
The powerful backing of American Express starts with our people. We take pride in our commitment to providing fair and equitable pay for all colleagues across the globe, through a periodically and independently reviewed pay structure that is equitable, transparent and free from bias.
At American Express, we have a longstanding commitment to pay all colleagues equitably and ensure that our compensation practices are free from bias. To help meet that commitment, we regularly review our compensation practices to verify they support pay equity and transparency.
Additionally, each year, American Express works with an independent third-party to conduct a comprehensive pay equity review. The review assesses pay on a statistical basis and considers a multitude of factors known to impact compensation, including but not limited to, tenure, role, level, geography and performance. In recent years, this review has covered our entire global colleague base. The review process identifies inconsistencies in pay based on gender globally and based on race and ethnicity in the United States. Where necessary and appropriate, salary adjustments are made to address these inconsistencies. In 2019, the goal of our review and subsequent adjustments was to achieve pay parity, meaning differences in pay were statistically insignificant. In 2020, we went even further and made additional investments to achieve 100% pay equity for colleagues across genders globally and across races and ethnicities in the United States. All necessary and appropriate salary adjustments were made to achieve 100% pay equity. The company is committed to this goal going forward.
We offer inclusive leadership training to our colleagues across the globe highlighting the role inclusive leadership plays in advancing our ability to attract, select, develop and retain a diverse workforce. Supported by external research, the training is organized around the four pillars of inclusive leadership: belonging, voice, fairness and growth.
Beyond raising awareness about inclusivity and unconscious bias, the training motivates and educates our colleagues to build inclusive, high-performing teams.

COMMITTED & INVESTED TO CREATING MORE REPRESENTATION
Our Enterprise Inclusion, Diversity and Business Engagement strategy encompasses six pillars: brand, culture, colleague, customer, business, and community. From a technology perspective, our action plan involves leveraging partnerships with Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs); sponsoring and participating in recruiting events with organizations that serve underrepresented groups, such as the National Society of Black Engineers, Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers, and AnitaB.org; ensuring diverse slates for all open roles, as well as diverse interview panels to fill those roles; increasing the diversity of our leadership programs; and pairing members of underrepresented groups with executive-level advocates. In these ways – and more – we’re striving to increase diverse representation in tech roles at Amex, continue building a culture of inclusion and belonging, and help ensure that underrepresented voices are heard in the technology industry.
